I believe that if a business website is not search engine optimized then it could be a total waste of time and money, unless the owner is prepared to promote it themselves. If your website is designed by a professional then it should be optimized. It should have good quality content, all the pages should link together effectively and you should not have complex pages and images.

Many of the most popular search engines today (Google, Yahoo etc) search the content of your site using what are referred to as "Meta Tags, keywords, and phrases." These are selected keywords specifically placed in your website during the stages of it's creation, that directly relate to your your website is offering. Once your site is submitted to the search engines (we submit your website to all the major ones free every 4 weeks regardless of which package you choose) people will find you and visit your site, as they will find it when they place a search using the keywords that relate to your kind of business, as they will have intentionally placed that search specifically looking for something, and there your site will be. Search engines use "robots" or "spiders" which actively crawl through your site searching its contents, so if your site is about photography, when a search is conducted, Googlebot will know that your site is relevant, there for placing it on the screens of the searcher.
In a recent press release we also learned that some of these engines Google mainly) are not paying too much attention to these "Meta Tag" keywords anymore, due to WebMasters all over the world keyword-spamming and spoiling it for the rest of us. Most are now paying more attention to the keyword density and the body copy of your site.

How Search Engines Work...
Google sends its robot (called Googlebot) to scan page by page all the websites on the World Wide Web in a less than a few seconds. It then indexes them by storing a copy of your pages in its billion-page database. Google will then re-visit your site every 6-8 weeks to check for changes, if changes are present, Google will then update the page it has saved in its database. When Google does visit your site, if all it finds when it reaches you is the strange language of Java (the fancy moving images) and it cannot find your keyword or key phrases or word content it will either disregard your site or simply skip over it, hence your site will not appear at the top of your screen. Java can make your site appear attractive and pleasing to the eye, some java is recommended to promote the professional profile of business, but should be kept to a minimum if you intend to benefit from search engines for customers. If you do wish your website to contain Java and JavaScript then I will optimize your site as much as possible, but to gain good positioning, we and they prefer plain html site with good content.
When Will The Search Engine Visit My Website
Once your site is submitted (which we offer free with all website design packages) it can take a few weeks before they actively crawl through your site, due to the billions of web pages in existence on the information super highway - the big www. We estimate it should be around 6-8 weeks from submission, before you will be recognized and listed within it's huge database. To get good rankings on Google is not an over-night process. It can take months before you achieve decent rankings, even longer to get high rankings, but when you do, its worth it.
If you plan to promote your site yourself using your present advertising campaigns, then an eloquent, complex site is for you. Tips On Linking
Search engines like the concept of linking. Having other websites link to you is yet another way to get good positioning and ranking. It proves your site is worth linking to, and that your site is a portal to a wealth of information
It is important that the sites you are linking to are somehow connected i.e. if your site is about a health club, good links would be to alternative medicines, dietary advice, sports clothing and supplies, and maybe other health clubs in other areas. Although non-related links are worth having, the best are the links that compliment your site.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Companies offering automated linking, or handing over any money for links. Google, MSN and Yahoo have wised up to such schemes (or scams!) and will disregard you totally if automated inking is suspected. This is classed as cheating. Even if the deal sounds so good and you are keen to get to the top of the ranks, be forewarned, you will not benefit from it.
